The Mato Grosso Military Fire Department's satellite-based forest fire monitoring platform won 1st place overall and 1st place per state in the 2024 Good Practices Award – Public Safety, from the Central Brazil Consortium. The result of the award was announced this Tuesday (10).
“This platform represents the commitment of the Government of Mato Grosso to combat forest fires. We invested in and developed a unique platform, essential for more efficient action against fires by gathering data in real time. We are a reference in combating forest fires and this award is further proof of that”, said the general commander of the Fire Department, Flávio Glêdson Bezerra.
The Environmental Emergency Battalion (BEA) was responsible for developing the platform, which brings together images captured by several qualified satellites and generates data in real time, such as heat sources, wind direction, air humidity and rainfall.
In addition, there is a fire prediction indicator, which identifies areas at risk of forest fires by cross-referencing meteorological data and fire recurrence. In this way, the Fire Department intensifies on-site monitoring of these regions to ensure a faster response to fires.
“There is a Fire Department before and after this platform. Our work has improved a lot because we are able to have a real understanding of the forest fire situation in the state. We are able to better direct resources, ensuring efficiency in combating them,” said the BEA commander, Lieutenant Colonel BM Pryscilla de Souza.
For winning in two categories, the team responsible for the platform will receive R$40,000, in addition to a travel package with a companion to any destination in Brazil, worth R$15,000, a certificate of recognition and a plaque of honor.
Other winners
Two other projects from Mato Grosso won the Central Brazil Consortium award. These are the initiatives “Modernization in the Treatment of Letters Rogatory: An Integrated Project for Efficiency and Safety” and “Environmental Conciliation Campaign of the State of Mato Grosso, of the State Secretariat for the Environment”, both submitted by the Civil Judicial Police.
The Best Practices Award recognizes innovative projects developed by public servants from Mato Grosso, the Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia and Tocantins. The winning projects were selected based on analysis by a specialized team from the Center for Public Leadership (CLP).
In the first quarter of 2025, an awards ceremony will be held to honor the winners.
